Suzuki's Stockman Legacy Lives On as Chery Revives the Iconic Name banner

The legendary Suzuki Stockman name has returned to the spotlight, with Chinese automotive brand Chery announcing it will use the name for its upcoming plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute. While the name may appear on a different vehicle, Suzuki Australia has responded with a confident and good-humoured reminder of where the Stockman story truly began.

For generations of Australian drivers, the Stockman name has been closely associated with Suzuki's tough and capable Sierra-based ute, a vehicle that earned a loyal following thanks to its rugged off-road ability and practical design.

Suzuki Proud of the Stockman Heritage

Following Chery's announcement, Suzuki Australia described the revival of the Stockman name as "the sincerest form of flattery."

Michael Pachota, General Manager of Suzuki Australia Automobiles, said the company was pleased to see the name remain so memorable after all these years.

"For many Australians, Stockman is a name that has been synonymous with Suzuki adventure and capability for decades."

It's a fitting acknowledgement of the impact the Suzuki Stockman made throughout the 1980s and 1990s, becoming a favourite among farmers, adventurers and off-road enthusiasts across Australia.

A Look Back at the Suzuki Stockman

The Suzuki Stockman was based on the much-loved Suzuki Sierra, offering a lightweight tray-back ute configuration that combined genuine 4WD capability with exceptional practicality.

Sold locally until the early 2000s, the Stockman developed a reputation for:

  • Outstanding off-road performance
  • Compact dimensions perfect for tight tracks and rural properties
  • Simple, dependable engineering
  • Lightweight construction and impressive versatility

Between 1991 and 2001, Suzuki sold nearly 2,900 Sierra Stockman models in Australia, cementing its place as one of the brand's most memorable vehicles.

Although later generations transitioned from the Sierra name to the globally recognised Jimny badge, the Stockman remains an important chapter in Suzuki's Australian history.

Will There Ever Be a Jimny Ute?

Ever since the latest-generation Suzuki Jimny arrived, enthusiasts have dreamed of a modern ute version carrying on the Stockman tradition.

While concept renderings regularly circulate online, Suzuki has previously indicated there are currently no plans to build a production Jimny ute.

According to Suzuki engineers, creating a genuine tray-back Jimny capable of carrying meaningful payloads would require significant chassis strengthening, making it difficult to deliver without compromising the lightweight character that makes the Jimny so popular.

For now, the iconic three-door Jimny and Jimny XL continue to represent Suzuki's focus on compact off-road adventure.

The Jimny Continues the Suzuki Adventure Spirit

While the Stockman may remain part of Suzuki's history, today's Suzuki Jimny carries forward the same adventurous DNA.

With exceptional off-road capability, compact dimensions and unmistakable styling, the Jimny has become one of Australia's most sought-after recreational 4WDs.

Whether you're exploring bush tracks, heading to the beach or simply enjoying weekend adventures, the Jimny delivers the capability and character Suzuki has been known for over decades.
